Spanning six countries across much of the Congo Basin, the Congolese Rainforest is the second largest rainforest in the world. A medley of rivers, forests, savannah, swamp and flooded woodland, the basin teems with life: gorillas, elephants and buffaloes all call the region home. Central Africa’s deforestation rate since 1990 has been the lowest of any major forest region in the world. Deforestation in the Congo over the past 20 years has often been from small-scale subsistence agriculture, clearing for charcoal and fuelwood, urban expansion and mining. All of this has indirect knock-on effects with logging roads opening up areas of the Congo to commercial poaching, leading to a 62% drop in the region’s forest elephant population in less than a decade.

Valdivian Temperate Rainforest: This forest spreads over an area of about 248,100 km2, found in west coast of southern South America in Chile and Argentina. Angiosperm trees, bamboos, ferns, conifer trees, narrow coastal strips, ice sheets, glaciers, and a central valley highlight the forest. The temperature is usually humid due to heavy rains. It’s normally very foggy. The rainforest is named after Valdivia, in Southern Chile and named after the city’s founder Pedro de Valdivia. The forest is famous for the endemic plants and 150 foot tall trees in addition to rare species of animals. Some of the old tree species are alerce and olivilo.

El Yunque on Puerto Rico’s east side is the only rainforest included in the US National Forest Service and it is known for its rare trees and birds. It is one of the smallest rainforests, but has a diverse habitat. As of January 2018 El Yunque is closed as it recovers from the massive damage sustained during Hurricane Maria, but you can continue to check their website and plan a trip as soon as it reopens. Here are some things to know before you go. Find additional info at El Yunque rain forest exploration blog. It was just a step in the 14 KM Tradewinds trail, but at some point in my explorations I look around for all the obvious and small things – and capture them with my camera. This – the ground below me was it – the simple leafs on it, a history of the fallen leaves of the forest, they document all the species above.
